CARP – February is Heart Month and Carp Commons Retirement Village is doing their part in staying active and healthy.

“During the month of February, we have organized small but achievable tasks everyday to help keep our Residents moving” Carp Commons life enrichment supervisor Patricia Hass told West Carleton Online Thursday (Jan. 27). “We have created a specific heart healthy calendar and each task can be completed in their own time or as a group.”

Heart attack, stroke and related conditions claim the life of a person in Canada every five minutes.

Things you can do to prevent Heart Disease and Stroke include eating a healthy diet and eating more vegetables, being physically active also helps keep your cholesterol and blood pressure low, taking your medications as prescribed and avoid smoking and drinking too much alcohol.

“At Carp Commons our meals are always nutritious and delicious with many options to choose from”, Hass said, “We help keep your body fit with our daily exercise programs by our Canfit Pro certified instructors, chair yoga, Latin chair dancing, strength, endurance and balance classes, as well as a walking club. We keep your mind strong with programs like fit minds, brain games and our various art classes. Our superior nursing staff can ensure you are taking the proper medications at the right time.”

The heart wise calendar program is open to those who are not residents of Carp Commons as well.

Anyone in our community who would like to join our heart wise calendar or learn more about Carp Commons Retirement Village you can call us at 613-839-1906 or email us at crm2.carp@verveseniorliving.com,” Hass said. “Carp Commons will donate $10 to the Heart & Stroke Foundation for each person who chooses to follow along our heart wise program.”

Happy New Year

CARP – Juke Joint chefs are turning a Carp Commons Retirement Village cookbook recipe in to a delicious meal you can take home and raise funds for the West Carleton Food Access Centre (WCFAC) at the same time.

Each year Carp Commons’ parent company Verve Inspired Senior Living puts out a cookbook of recipes harvested from the executive chefs at some of the company’s senior villages. This year, the Carp Commons’ Rebekah Gunning and Melanie Webber reached out to Juke Point Soul Kitchen owner Corri Greenberg to come up with a unique fundraiser for the WCFAC.

“Collecting food donations is a littler harder this year,” Gunning told West Carleton Online today (Dec. 1). “In fact, the WCFAC can’t accept food donations. So, we came up with this idea to help raise some funds.”

For the next two weeks starting today (Dec. 1) the Juke Joint’s chefs have chosen a recipe out of the Living Loving Local cookbook to prepare for the community. The recipe, Chicken Parmasiago with Mac and Cheese can be ordered for take-out for only $10 with all proceeds going to the WCFAC.

The Chicken Parmasiago comes from the cookbook and will be paired with the Juke Joint’s popular Mac and Cheese to make this outstanding meal. West Carleton Online was able to sample the meal and it was incredible.

The dish will be served as a take-home meal from the Juke Joint refrigerator made fresh every day. It can also be frozen for those who might want the incredible meal a couple of days in a row. All you have to do is pop it in the oven.

Greenberg says she has enjoyed her partnership with the Carp Commons and was very pleased with how the recipe turned out.

“It was suggested we try this one,” Greenberg told West Carleton Online. “It’s light. You might not think to put these ingredients together. It’s all fresh and when I tried it, it was great.”

“There goes my diet,” Webber said was her first thought after trying the dish.

IF you are interested in supporting the WCFAC through the purchase of this incredible meal (and seriously, where else are you going to find a take-out meal for $10?), you can order from the Juke Joint Soul Kitchen (3740 Carp Rd.) by calling 613-470-8888. Dec. 14 is the last day of this fundraiser.

CARP – It is not a surprise the Carp Commons Retirement Village hasn’t had a single case of COVID-19 during the two-month pandemic. It’s a commitment to safety.

The Carp Commons Retirement Village is West Carleton’s largest building. The seniors’ residence has a large and varied workforce serving more than 100 residents. Some of that workforce is shift work. Some of that workforce are food handlers. All of that workforce routinely interacts with the residents.

While the coronavirus has taken a huge toll on institutions and seniors, the Carp Commons has not had to deal with one single case as the seventh week of the state of emergency comes to a close.

Carp Commons staff were quick to act when news of COVID-19 spread. Early in March the building closed to essential people only, far ahead of the curve and long before other senior facilities followed suit.

Around March 15 the Carp Commons Retirement Village started screening visitors and preventing entry to anyone who has travelled outside of Canada in the last two weeks. Residents were restricted to one visitor at a time who had to remain in the host’s suite and wear a mask.

“We were proactive in our protocols to keep residents and team members safe,” Carp Commons Retirement Village Chris Bishop told West Carleton Online today (May 7). “This has been part of our success in not having COVID-19 in our building. All of our residents are safe and happy.”

The pandemic brings a certain kind of stress for those considered essential service staff. Bishop says his team has been handling the extra precautions and duties well.

“Our team at Carp Commons is amazing,” Bishop said. “Lots of changes operationally needed to be made to keep everyone safe. It has been challenging, but the residents and families have been so supportive to the team here.”

As a thank you to the Carp Commons team and its residents, parent company Verve Senior Living honoured those in Carp, and at their other residences across Canada, by having a local artist draw a chalk art mural of thanks.

Local Carp artist Robbie Larivere, also known as Falldown, went to work on the pavement in front of the Carp Commons just yesterday (May 6).

Bishop made sure all the residents got to see his work.

“All of our residents that lived on the back of the building were assigned suites in the front and asked to come to the patios at 1 p.m., he said. “They loved Robbie’s work.”
