Happy Mothers Day to all you wonderful mothers everywhere!

The Roxborough Retirement Residence would like to present our Mother Daughter Lookalike contest winner Nathalie here in a photo with her wonderful Mom.

We would like to give thanks to everyone who submitted a photo. The response was overwhelming which made it a difficult choice for us. However, it was the story behind the picture that was so heartwarming, and a true testament to the devotion and connection a mother and daughter share. Nathalie’s words are so uplifting and inspiring not only for Mother’s Day, but for the human compassion that we should all be reminded of and practice with each other through this challenging time.

Here is Nathalie’s wonderful story

mother's day contest

“There is a bit of a story behind this, like every mom is special, and every story is beautiful, but my story may be somewhat unique.

My mom passed away on September 3, 2020, with a fairly long battle with dementia. My mother was a teacher for over 28 years and had been retired for over a decade. We also lost my dad, her husband, 6 years ago to esophagus cancer. My mom’s passing was devastating for the family but sadly recognized it was her time, as she had lost over 70 pounds, in one year, and had lost all general sense of life in a spirally decline. I was, however, glad that I was able to travel to Sudbury to spend the last 4 days with her bedside, giving her all our final love, and telling her it was okay to go, and to go and rejoin dad!

Like many families this year, a death of a loved one, marred the worst of 2020, and there have been many. My mom’s passing was also 9 days before my eldest daughter’s (Ashley) wedding on September 12th. The first wedding on both sides of the family. (which she was forced to change the wedding 3 times due to covid restrictions) I can honestly tell you that their wedding was the best day of 2020, but I can attest that it certainly was a flurry of mixed emotions, tears, and happy moments overall, especially from making funeral arrangements, writing my mom’s obituary, to writing my mother of the bride speech for the wedding, all within a few days apart.

So with this nomination, I’d like to submit the two photos, as we my mom and I do look quite a bit a like, we have the same eyes, cheeks and smile.

I believe my two daughters could really benefit from the spa day as well, in honour of my dear mom, their grandma, and a tribute that we are all still together in mind and spirit. This Mother’s Day will be a tough one no doubt, as it’s the first one, that I won’t be able to celebrate with her, and to honour the great mother she was, as well as developing her kids to who we are today.”

The Roxborough Retirement Residence were delighted to celebrate two very special 100th birthdays.

Birthdays at Verve

George Markow turned 100 on April 14th 2021. One year ago, George set out on a mission to walk 100km before his 100th birthday and well, he has certainly surpassed this goal! George continues to inspire us all with his determination, kindness, and gratitude. You can still donate to George’s gofundme page!

To celebrate his milestone birthday, George’s daughter Sylvia appealed to the community to send him birthday cards. See his reaction below!

Another BIG Happy 100th Birthday to resident of The Roxborough Retirement Residence, Irene!

Irene is a beautiful person inside and out. She is always looking on the positive side and has a smile on her face. We are thrilled to be able to celebrate this incredible milestone with her. To celebrate, we asked her what the secret is to living this long!

The team at The Roxborough Retirement Residence look forward to celebrating many more birthday’s with George and Irene.

Sending a birthday card to the senior who raised more than $160,000 for medical research will boost his spirits after many months in isolation and help mark the April 14 milestone.

2021 03 26 George Markow 100th birthday

After months in isolation at his Newmarket retirement home, George Markow would welcome your best wishes for a very big birthday coming up on April 14.

The heroic Newmarket senior who raised more than $160,000 for medical research in 2020 could now use a little something in return.

With just weeks to go until George Markow’s milestone 100th birthday on April 14, Markow’s daughter Sylvia Perkins is appealing to the community to send him birthday cards.

“As we will not be able to have a major celebration at that time, I do have a favour to ask. If anyone is willing, could you please send a birthday card to honour him on his special day? It would mean the world to him,” wrote Perkins on Markow’s GoFundMe page. “He is very humble, and does not feel worthy, but I do know that it would thrill him to no end.”

The 99-year-old Second World War veteran made national headlines when he embarked on a 100-kilometre fundraising walk around his Newmarket retirement home last April. Hoping to raise $100,000 for Southlake Regional Hospital Foundation’s COVID-19 Action Fund and the Sunnybrook Research Institute before his 100th birthday, Markow shattered all goals when he first surpassed the 100- km mark in September, and the $100,000 fundraising goal through direct and GoFundMe donations in December.

Walking to this day, Markow has gone on to complete an incredible 150 km.

Being isolated at the Roxborough Retirement Residence to ensure the safety of himself and other residents has been hard for Markow, wrote Perkins. He “eagerly waits for his daily mail in hopes of another card arriving,” while opening cards are the “the highlight of his day.”

“With only one month until his 100th birthday this April 14, he is concerned about being alone. He actually asked me to bring him a bottle of champagne so that he can pop it and have a celebratory drink in his room, alone. Hearing him say those words instantly brought tears to my eyes,” wrote Perkins.

Receiving cards from a Grade 3 class thanking him for his service in the war was enough to bring tears of happiness to Markow’s eyes, said Perkins. She’s hopeful that birthday cards will provide the same mood-boosting effect.

“Both of us are so thankful and appreciative for your kind and thoughtful gestures…they mean more than you could ever know!”

Please mail birthday cards to:

“My dad was one of the first residents to move into The Roxborough Retirement Residence. And since that day over 11 years ago, he has been very happy, and that makes me, his daughter, thrilled! When your elderly parent moves from their home into a different, new environment, you want the transition to be as stress free as possible for them. And I can guarantee that the wonderful and kind staff at The Roxborough did just that! My dad began to feel at “home” very quickly because of the genuine care that he felt from the staff. And that care has never diminished, but only grown over the years!

My dad has a wide variety of activities to choose from each and every day. Depending on what your loved one enjoys, they are sure to find something to keep them active and involved, from games, puzzles, crafts, movies, exercise and gardening, just to name just a few. Also, guest performers are invited to provide wonderful entertainment for all to enjoy! Prior to the pandemic, my now 99 year ‘young’ dad was rarely ever in his room! And we all know how important social interactions are, especially for seniors, to keep their minds and bodies healthy.

My dad also enjoys the variety of tasty meals offered. The kitchen staff make every effort to accommodate their residents, knowing their likes and dislikes, and of course any allergies. We as a family have thoroughly enjoyed many delicious monthly Sunday brunches over the years! And we look forward to them again, hopefully in the not too distant future!

With regard to safety, especially since the Covid-19 pandemic, The Roxborough is second to none. The staff have done, and continue to do, everything possible to keep their residents safe. And they have certainly succeeded in doing that. Family members have regularly been kept informed, which is greatly appreciated. I am so thankful knowing that my dad is in such a safe and caring environment!

Whenever I enter The Roxborough, I am always greeted with a warm and welcoming smile. So many staff members have worked there for years, and as my dad says, “They truly feel like family and treat me like family!” What more could anyone ask for!”

An incredible man, on an incredible mission.

UPDATE – SEPTEMBER 2, 2020-

George completed his 100k walk! Just before George completed his 100th km at the Roxborough Retirement Residence, he was presented with a personalized @mapleleafs jersey from @zachhyman. George has been a Leafs fan all his life and this was a very special moment.

Meet George Markow, a 99 year-young WWII veteran who wants to achieve a tremendous goal before his 100th birthday. George has challenged himself to walk 100km before his 100th birthday early spring 2021. George lives in his retirement home in Newmarket, Ontario, where there is a walking path that circles the gardens and he is determined to walk around that over 1,500 times as 15 times around = 1km.

George has faced much adversity over his lifetime, overcoming unbelievable odds to survive through the war, and to build a life filled with loyalty, determination and strength. This will serve him well to achieve this goal. The current COVID-19 pandemic, and his grandson who is a front line hero as a paramedic, has set this journey in motion.

All money raised will be donated to Medical Research Organizations, specifically Sunnybrook Research Institute (75%) and Southlake Regional Hospital Foundation Covid-19 Action Fund (25%) to support the amazing work being done today, tomorrow and for future generations.
