The Roxborough Retirement Residence: Mother Daughter Lookalike Contest

Happy Mothers Day to all you wonderful mothers everywhere!

The Roxborough Retirement Residence would like to present our Mother Daughter Lookalike contest winner Nathalie here in a photo with her wonderful Mom.

We would like to give thanks to everyone who submitted a photo. The response was overwhelming which made it a difficult choice for us. However, it was the story behind the picture that was so heartwarming, and a true testament to the devotion and connection a mother and daughter share. Nathalie’s words are so uplifting and inspiring not only for Mother’s Day, but for the human compassion that we should all be reminded of and practice with each other through this challenging time.

Here is Nathalie’s wonderful story

“There is a bit of a story behind this, like every mom is special, and every story is beautiful, but my story may be somewhat unique.

My mom passed away on September 3, 2020, with a fairly long battle with dementia. My mother was a teacher for over 28 years and had been retired for over a decade. We also lost my dad, her husband, 6 years ago to esophagus cancer. My mom’s passing was devastating for the family but sadly recognized it was her time, as she had lost over 70 pounds, in one year, and had lost all general sense of life in a spirally decline. I was, however, glad that I was able to travel to Sudbury to spend the last 4 days with her bedside, giving her all our final love, and telling her it was okay to go, and to go and rejoin dad!

Like many families this year, a death of a loved one, marred the worst of 2020, and there have been many. My mom’s passing was also 9 days before my eldest daughter’s (Ashley) wedding on September 12th. The first wedding on both sides of the family. (which she was forced to change the wedding 3 times due to covid restrictions) I can honestly tell you that their wedding was the best day of 2020, but I can attest that it certainly was a flurry of mixed emotions, tears, and happy moments overall, especially from making funeral arrangements, writing my mom’s obituary, to writing my mother of the bride speech for the wedding, all within a few days apart.

So with this nomination, I’d like to submit the two photos, as we my mom and I do look quite a bit a like, we have the same eyes, cheeks and smile.

I believe my two daughters could really benefit from the spa day as well, in honour of my dear mom, their grandma, and a tribute that we are all still together in mind and spirit. This Mother’s Day will be a tough one no doubt, as it’s the first one, that I won’t be able to celebrate with her, and to honour the great mother she was, as well as developing her kids to who we are today.”
